Everything you need to know before joining

    our Soul & Surf Retreat

Planning your South African surf adventure? We've put together answers to the questions we hear most often. Whether it's your very first wave or you're looking to improve your surfing, you'll find everything you need to know right here.

Still have a question? We'd love to hear from you!

Feel free to get in touch, and we'll be happy to help you plan your Surf Retreat.

Everything you need to know about the surfing experience.

    Surf Retreat

Is this surf retreat suitable for complete beginners?

Yes! Most of our guests have never surfed before. We start from the basics and help you build your confidence step by step.

Can I join if I already have surf experience?

Absolutely. Our Improve Your Surf sessions focus on improving your technique, reading the waves and becoming a more confident surfer. If conditions allow, we may also visit other nearby surf spots.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes, absolutely. Being able to swim is a requirement for joining our surf retreat. You don't need to be an expert swimmer, but you should feel comfortable in the ocean and be able to swim independently.

Do I need to be fit?

A basic level of fitness is enough. You'll naturally build strength and endurance throughout the retreat.

What does a surf lesson look like?

Each lesson lasts approximately 90 minutes.

We begin with a short warm-up to loosen the muscles and stretch the body.

After that, we'll explain the conditions, the beach and what to look out for before practising a few techniques on the sand.

Then it's time to hit the water and start surfing!

    How big are the groups?

We believe smaller groups create a better learning experience.

Our surf groups usually consist of 4 to 6 participants, depending on the total number of guests. This allows for plenty of individual coaching and personal attention throughout every lesson.

What surf equipment do you use during the lessons?

We provide everything you need throughout your Surf retreat. All surf equipment is included. We use 4/3 mm Reef wetsuits to keep you warm and comfortable.

Lessons always start on soft-top surfboards, which are perfect for learning safely. More experienced surfers can choose from a selection of hardboards in different sizes.

If you already own a wetsuit and prefer to use it, you're more than welcome to bring it along.

Why Pringle Bay instead of Muizenberg or J-Bay?

Muizenberg and J-Bay are both legendary surf destinations. Muizenberg is famous as one of the best beginner waves in the world, while J-Bay is considered one of the world's greatest surf breaks.

But South Africa has so much more to offer.

Pringle Bay is a small coastal village hidden along one of the most scenic drives in the country. It's peaceful, slightly off the beaten track and has everything you need, from cafés and restaurants to small local shops.

You'll surf in a beautiful bay surrounded by mountains, without the crowds, and experience waves you'll remember long after your trip.

What are the advantages of surfing in Pringle Bay?

There are plenty of reasons why we love surfing here:
    - Great wind conditions
    - Very uncrowded line-up
    - Beautiful natural surroundings
    - A relaxed village atmosphere
    - Clean sandy bottom

Is the beach within walking distance?

Absolutely. Our guesthouse is located close to the village centre, and it's only about a 10-minute walk to the beach. You'll follow the wooden boardwalk that leads straight into the beautiful bay.

Are there other surf spots nearby?

    Definitely!

Betty's Bay, just 10 minutes away by car.

Betty's Bay offers several beaches with excellent waves. The surf is generally bigger and better suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. The seabed is mostly sand.

Koel Bay, around 15 minutes drive from Pringle bay.

Koel Bay sits beneath impressive cliffs, which means it's often protected from the wind. Expect stronger currents and more powerful waves. The seabed is a mix of sand and rocks, making it suitable for experienced surfers only.

What are the waves like in Pringle Bay?

Pringle Bay offers slightly steeper, more powerful waves than many beginner beaches. Depending on the conditions, you'll find both left and right-hand waves. On the best days, experienced surfers can even score the occasional barrel.

    What is the seabed like?

No worries! Pringle Bay has a natural sandy bottom, so there are no rocks underneath you where we teach.

Which wind direction works best in Pringle Bay?

The ideal wind is a south-easterly. These conditions usually create clean, fun waves that are perfect for our surf lessons.

What is the water temperature throughout the year?

Summer (December – February) The warmest time of the year. Water temperatures usually range between 19°C and 23°C.

Winter (June – August) The coldest season. Water temperatures are usually between 14°C and 16°C.

What marine life might I see while surfing?

One of the best things about surfing in Pringle Bay is the wildlife. Depending on the season, you might spot: fish, seals, dolphins or whales. And if you're lucky, dolphins may even surf the waves alongside you.

    Is surfing safe?

Safety always comes first. We choose the surf spot according to the conditions and the level of the group. Every lesson is led by experienced surf coaches.

What happens if there are no waves?

The coastline around Pringle Bay offers several surf spots, so we can often move to another location.

If surfing isn't possible, we'll organise alternative activities or additional surf theory sessions.

Everything you need to know before you travel.

    Planning your surf retreat

    What should I bring?

    We recommend packing:
    - Comfortable clothes for all seasons
    - Swimwear
    - Beach towel
    - Sunscreen
    - Hat or cap
    - Flip-flops
    - Reusable water bottle
    - A warm sweater or jacket for the evenings

Is there Wi-Fi at the guesthouse?

Yes! Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the guesthouse, so you can stay connected whenever you need to.

Can I come on my own?

Absolutely! Many of our guests travel solo. Our Surf Retreat is a great way to meet like-minded people, make new friends and share an unforgettable experience together.

When is the best time to visit?

We surf all year round, and every season has something unique to offer.

Summer brings warmer water, long sunny days and plenty of outdoor activities, while winter often delivers more consistent swell for surfing. Thanks to Pringle Bay's mild coastal climate, it's a fantastic destination throughout the year.

    Do I need a visa?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Many EU citizens can stay in South Africa for up to 90 days without applying for a visa in advance.

We recommend checking the official South African immigration website or contacting your local South African embassy before travelling to confirm the latest entry requirements.

    Is Pringle Bay safe?

Yes. Pringle Bay is a small, relaxed coastal village with a friendly local community. Like anywhere in the world, we recommend using common sense and taking normal travel precautions, but our guests generally experience Pringle Bay as a peaceful and safe destination.

Do you cater for vegetarians or vegans?

Yes! Our daily breakfast is vegetarian and vegan-friendly, with plenty of fresh and delicious options.

During our welcome and farewell braais, we also provide tasty vegetarian and vegan alternatives, so everyone can enjoy the experience together.

What can I expect from the optional Dinner Package?

The optional Dinner Package includes 8 freshly prepared evening meals served during your Surf Retreat.

Our menu focuses on wholesome, seasonal dishes and is vegetarian and vegan-friendly, with plenty of flavour and variety.

The package includes 8 dinners because your retreat already includes a Welcome Braai and Farewell Braai, while one evening is reserved for our optional Pizza Night Out at a local restaurant.

Can my partner join without surfing?

Our Surf Retreat is designed as a complete experience, combining surfing, accommodation and all included activities.

For that reason, every guest books the full retreat package. At this time, we do not offer a non-surfer package.

Everything you need to know about booking your Surf Retreat.
